Monsoon's Early Arrival in Maharashtra

The India Meteorological Department announced that the southwest monsoon reached Maharashtra on Sunday, marking the earliest onset in the state in 35 years.

According to a meteorologist, the last time the monsoon arrived this early was in 1990, specifically on May 20.

Typically, the southwest monsoon season commences in June and begins to withdraw by September. The onset is officially recognized when it first impacts Kerala, usually arriving in Maharashtra around June 7 and in Mumbai by June 11.

This year, however, Kerala experienced the monsoon's arrival eight days ahead of the usual June 1 date, the earliest since 2009 when it came on May 24.

On the same day, the monsoon progressed into additional regions of Karnataka, all of Goa, and parts of Maharashtra, Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland.

The weather agency indicated that conditions are favorable for the monsoon to advance further into parts of the central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra (including Mumbai), Karnataka (including Bengaluru), parts of Andhra Pradesh, the remaining areas of Tamil Nadu, and various northeastern states over the next three days.

Additionally, an orange alert was issued for Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram, and Alappuzha.

In response to the severe weather forecast, authorities declared a holiday for educational institutions in ten of the affected districts.
